2、ety of commercial, scientific, and personal purposes. The U.S. coastal areas are twice as developed as the rest of the country, and such development has been increasing. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that 127 million people lived in coastal counties as of 2014 and that

3、population density along the coast has been increasing. However, such areas are also susceptible to erosion, flooding, and damage from severe storms that can bring high winds, powerful waves, heavy precipitation, and storm surge. These challenges for people living and working along the coast are lik

4、ely to increase with the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise, potential changes in weather patterns, and potential exacerbation of algal blooms.
